Dance is a spontaneous expression of any emotion. Civilizations across the globe evolved their own systems of this expression which gained structure from native forms. Indian Classical Dance, as the form is generally referred to, is perhaps different in the sense that it combines not just entertainment but spiritual, religious and philosophical content. The general belief is that Hindu philosophy gives little importance to the carnal body, and that esoteric pursuits alone are but the purpose of human life. In reality, it is propounded that the human body must be disciplined and made fit to facilitate focus of mind and hence clarity in perception. This concept was a part of every activity in India, more so of dance as it demands a regulated breath. The closely knit connection between body and mind with the thread of breath is a basic requirement in Indian dance. This is but Yoga. Dance must be practiced with awareness of the body and breath so that both the artiste and audience are convinced and in a state of joy. A studied stepwise practice is adhered to in dance as in Yoga.
